The main source of communication between all of us has been through Facebook. In the last 9 years we have spoken on the phone with someone from Africa less than five times and received a few emails, but in the last year we have been in contact with them more through Facebook than we have any other method of communication. In Nigeria, less than 5% of the population have internet access in their homes. In spite of this grim statistic, many Nigerians still have access to internet in public locations, and through cell phone access. In a country where basic utilities, city infrastructure, and road passage are all big challenges, they still have access to Facebook.
I don't know what the TV service is like there now, but when we were there in 2004, there were only 2 main channels that they were able to get regularly, TBN (Trinity Broadcasting Network), and CNN news. Imagine the misconception of America, its churches, and its people that is built by only seeing us through the eyes of TBN and CNN. I am a big supporter of TBN and all of the ministry that they do, but their TV station is still a very narrow window into our lives. The internet has broadened their ability to see more globally and ours as well.
The power of the internet to educate and connect people is growing stronger every day. The ministry possibilities are endless when you utilize the internet to get your message across. In Nigeria, there are hundreds, maybe even thousands of tribal languages, but most of the people are still connected through the english language. Oftentimes they may struggle with understanding our vocal form of English with its slang and dialects, but most of them can read English and understand our words very well. We have a responsibility and a calling to reach out to those countries, not with our own hidden agendas or political views, but for the purpose of educating and spreading a message of peace and hope.
